A good design has to always be backed by a strong skeleton, which in case of tillage tools, is its heat treatment. Tillage tools and disc blades must be strong, durable and sharp to be able to overcome different soil types, strong crop residue, hard packed soil, rocks on fields and still be able to invert soil and prepare an ideal seedbed.

The Science Behind Heat Treatment

At Cultivatus, Heat treatment of our disc blades and coulters is done in two phases to make sure the steel has both, increased hardness and optimum level of flexibility.

First step, our high-quality Boron steel is heated and soaked at a predefined temperature based on chemical composition of the steel. This is done to change the internal microstructure of the steel. Once the transformation is done to the new (austenitic) structure the metal is cooled rapidly at a particular rate to form and hard crystalline (martensitic) structure. This gives the steel its hardness but also makes it very brittle just like glass due to the temperature shock given to the steel.

Thus, comes step two, in order to relive the shock/stress in the tools as the parts are further held at precisely controlled temperature for a specific time (considerably lower than the temperature in the first step) depending on the chemical composition. This process helps the disc blades regain flexibility on account of loss of hardness. It is this right balance of hardness and flexibility that allow tillage tools, disc blades and coulters to overcome such dynamic soil conditions.
